WHAT'S SPECIAL
Honey and Chili oil mixed into goat cheese then deep fried and topped with delicious hot honey. What could go wrong?

I apologize in advance, for the excessive amount of photos that this post contains. But you have to understand, these hot honey chili oil goat cheese balls are insane!

Like absolutely a knockout appetizer.

I made these for superbowl sunday thinking they would be a fun little appetizer for my friends and I and when they were done frying and I served them up, I was excited with how good they turned out!

A while back I received this chili oil from Momofuku from a good friend and have wanted to find something to use it with ever since. I typically use chili oils with dumplings but this time really was craving some sort of mozzarella stick or fried cheese and what better way to get the best of both worlds then to just combine them.

So fried goat cheese balls with honey and chili oil it was. And man, did these turn out so delicious!

It really is a simple recipe, all you need is a few tablespoons of honey and chili oil mixed with goat cheese and dip them into a standard egg, flour, breadcrumb mixture and fry them right up! Once fried, I love to just drench these with hot honey.

If you don’t know me too well, you will soon find out that hot honey has to be one of my favorite things in the world. A simple yet delicious mixture that can basically go on anything. I usually make hot honey for dipping my pizza in, drizzling on avocado toast and now dipping these delicious goat cheese balls into.

I had the best time taking photos of this recipe. I made these especially for superbowl sunday with a few friends with us to watch the game. It was such a fun day. I would make an appetizer, take some photos of it, force my friends to hold stuff for the photos or use their hands for the pictures, then we would pass around the apps and enjoy!

Just a day full of cooking and eating. Which is about all I ever want in life. Cook, eat, repeat.

If you decide to make this recipe, which i highly recommend, let me know what you think of it! I will 100% be making this again in the future and am so excited to play around with the flavors. I was thinking of some fun combinations that I might try yet and so far i’ve come up with:

  • black pepper and pistachio
  • tarragon and honey
  • sundried tomato and pesto cream dipping sauce
  • bacon and date with a roasted red pepper cheese sauce

Which one should I try next? Let me know your vote in the comments below!

Chili Oil Goat Cheese Balls with Hot Honey

Honey and Chili oil mixed into goat cheese then deep fried and topped with delicious hot honey. What else do you really need in an appetizer?
Servings 20 balls
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Chill Time 10 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes

Ingredients

Goat Cheese Balls

  • 1.5 lbs Goat Cheese
  • 3 tbsp chili oil (I use Momofuku)
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup panko
  • 1 cup flour
  • Canola Oil

Hot Honey

  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 3 tbsp chili oil (I like to use Sambal Oelek for Hot Honeys)

Instructions

  • Mix together goat cheese, chili oil, honey, salt and pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Roll into 16-20 balls (depending on what size you would like) and place on a baking tray in the refrigerator up to 15 minutes while you get the dipping station ready.
  • Beat the eggs and a splash of water in a bowl. Add panko crumbs to a separate bowl with some salt and pepper. Add all purpose flour to another plate and season with S+P. This will be your dipping station.
  • Roll the goat cheese balls in the flour, dip in the egg mixture then cover with breadcrumbs. Shake off any excess breadcrumbs and place back on the baking tray. When finished, place back in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
  • When ready to fry add enough canola oil to a dutch oven or heavy bottom cast iron skillet to cover about 3 inches. Heat to 375 degrees. Fry the goat cheese balls 4-5 at a time until golden and crispy, about 3 minutes. Place on a paper towel lined baking sheet to drain, the fry the rest of the balls.
  • Mix the honey and chili oil together and set aside.
  • Place the goat cheese balls on a dish to serve, drizzle with the hot honey and sprinkle with flaky sea salt. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

Kid Friendly Adaptation: Got a picky eater? Just ditch the chili oil and use just the honey. Same great flavor with a less spice!
